- Step 1: Start by washing the lemons thoroughly. This step is crucial because you want to ensure your jam is as clean as can be. Once washed, zest the lemons and then juice them, making sure to remove any seeds.
- Step 2: In a medium saucepan, combine the lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, and water. Stir well until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Step 3: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. As it heats up, keep an eye on it! Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and allow it to simmer for about 30-40 minutes. Stir occasionally until it thickens.
- Step 4: To test the consistency, place a small amount of the jam on a cold plate and let it sit for a minute. Run your finger through it; if it holds its shape, it’s ready to go!
- Step 5: If you want to take your jam to the next level, stir in the vanilla extract for added flavor.
- Step 6: Pour the hot lemon jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace at the top. Seal the jars tightly.
- Step 7: Allow the jam to cool to room temperature before storing it in the refrigerator or pantry. Enjoy the sweet sunshine whenever you like!
Notes
Your homemade lemon jam can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three weeks, or you can keep it in a cool, dark pantry for about a month. Just make sure to check for any signs of spoilage before use. If you want to enjoy it longer, consider canning it!
