Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup baking soda Essential for fizzing reaction
  • 1/2 cup citric acid Can be found in stores or online
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch Helps bind the mixture
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil Can substitute with coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon food coloring Your choice of color
  • 1/4 teaspoon essential oil optional; Add for fragrance
  • 1/2 cup water adjust as needed to achieve the right consistency

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Separate bowl
  • Baking Sheet

Method

  1. Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch. Stir until well mixed.
  2. Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix the vegetable oil, food coloring, and essential oil (if using). Slowly pour this mixture into the dry ingredients.
  3. Step 3: Use your hands to mix the ingredients together. The mixture should start to clump together but should not be too wet. If it's too dry, add a little water, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
  4. Step 4: Once the mixture is well combined, take small portions and shape them into small rocks or balls. You can press them into molds for fun shapes.
  5. Step 5: Place the shaped Lava Rocks on a baking sheet and allow them to dry for at least 24 hours. They should harden completely.
  6. Step 6: Once dry, store your fizzing lava rocks in an airtight container until you're ready to use them.
  7. Step 7: To use, simply drop a fizzing lava rock into water and watch it fizz and bubble!

Notes

Ensure all dry ingredients are well combined to avoid clumping. Adjust the water carefully to achieve a moldable consistency without making it too wet.
