- Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch. Stir until well mixed.
- Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix the vegetable oil, food coloring, and essential oil (if using). Slowly pour this mixture into the dry ingredients.
- Step 3: Use your hands to mix the ingredients together. The mixture should start to clump together but should not be too wet. If it's too dry, add a little water, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
- Step 4: Once the mixture is well combined, take small portions and shape them into small rocks or balls. You can press them into molds for fun shapes.
- Step 5: Place the shaped Lava Rocks on a baking sheet and allow them to dry for at least 24 hours. They should harden completely.
- Step 6: Once dry, store your fizzing lava rocks in an airtight container until you're ready to use them.
- Step 7: To use, simply drop a fizzing lava rock into water and watch it fizz and bubble!
Notes
Ensure all dry ingredients are well combined to avoid clumping. Adjust the water carefully to achieve a moldable consistency without making it too wet.
